The Age Old Question

So on Star Trek, they are constantly encountering random ass phenomenas that threaten to destroy the ship and inevitably someone needs to recalibrate the sensors or the phasers or the shields or whatever. Why don't they just keep the sensors calibrated to detect everything and save everyone a lot of time?
